High Yield Cartridges vs Low Yield

High yield cartridges are a great way to reduce the running costs of a printer. Sure, they might cost more to purchase, but with good reason.

Let me explain…

Some printers accept cartridges that come in different capacities. These cartridges might appear to be the same on the outside, but vary in the volume of printing material (ink or toner) inside them.

Some printer models use cartridges rated as standard or high yield. And some models even have three or four different yields. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this is by giving an example…

The Brother HLL6400DW mono laser printer gives you a choice of four toners with different yields:

TN3415 Toner Cartridge –> 3,000 pages

TN3425 High Yield Toner Cartridge –> 8,000 pages

TN3465 Super High Yield Toner Cartridge –> 12,000 pages

TN3475 Ultra High Yield Toner Cartridge –> 20,000 pages

At the time of writing this article, for the Brother HLL6400DW the 20,000 page cartridge is cheaper than both the 12,000 page version and the 8,000 page versions!

The point being… you need to understand what the yield of a cartridge is, and how your running costs will vary depending on the comparative options available.

Why You Should Never Choose A Printer Cartridge Purely On Purchase Price

That said, high yield cartridges usually cost more to purchase than standard yield.

High yield cartridges print more pages than low yield cartridges. So long term, they’re usually a cheaper option, even if they cost more to buy. Bottom line… with high yield cartridges you’ll be replacing the cartridges less often, and your cost per page will be lower.

Unfortunately, many big box retailers and cartridge suppliers don’t tell you that high yield cartridges will be more economical for you over the long term. Actually, the retailers make more money from the lower yield cartridges because you’ll need to come back more often. And while it’s better for their bottom line… it’s not in your best interests.

Warning: Some high yield cartridges are very low yield when compared with others!!  An example (at time writing): Brother LC239XLBK at $57.08 with a yield of 2400 pages vs the Canon PG640XL at $35.84 but only a yield of 400 pages.

Brother high yield cartridges – the LC239XLBK has a rated yield of 2400 pages.

That makes the Canon XL cartridge 3.8 times more expensive than the Brother cartridge even though they are both “XL” cartridges!

So after reading this, you won’t want to choose cartridges on price alone. Instead, look at the yield and consider the price per page before making a decision.
